Liverpool people are being encouraged to adopt better lifestyles through a new healthy eating project.

A special event in the Old Riding School Café, Croxteth Park - 'A Great Start' - is highlighting the importance of eating a healthy breakfast every day, as well as staying active.

Staff will serve up a hearty, healthy breakfast and once visitors have tucked into their nourishing 'nosh', they can go on a walk in the park.

It is part of Liverpool's Annual Farmhouse Breakfast Campaign, which aims to get people into good habits, promote healthy lifestyles and tackle obesity.

The council's executive member for leisure, Councillor Colin Eldridge will be setting a good example by sampling a wholesome breakfast of his own at Croxteth Park ahead of the event.

Councillor Eldridge said: "Nutritionists agree that breakfast is one of the most important meals of the day and essential for a balanced and active lifestyle.

"This is the perfect event for local people who have decided to turn over a new leaf for the New Year."

The café is run by Myerscough College. Helen Eaton, in charge of the college's Outreach service, said: "We have 350 students based at Croxteth Hall Park and the café is very popular with them as well as the public."

"We encourage them all to eat healthily and to always have breakfast as it helps maintain energy levels and aids concentration throughout the day."

Organisers are also inviting people to bring their canine to the event to promote the park as the ideal location for dog-walking. Park rangers are offering guided walks as part of the event

Farmhouse Breakfast Week takes place at Old Riding School Café from 20-26 January, 8.30am - 5.00pm weekdays and 10am - 4.30pm on weekends.
