Lib Dems Take Post Office Fight To Downing Street

Liberal Democrat Parliamentary Spokesperson Colin Eldridge today took the fight to save Liverpool's Post Offices to Downing St.

He joined Liberal Democrats from across Britain to present a massive 52,000 strong petition calling on Gordon Brown to reverse the Government's savage Post Office closure programme.

Labour plans to close a further 2500 Post Offices (including 7 more under threat in Liverpool). This will hit communities hard across Britain. These closures come on top of a further 7500 already closed by Labour and Conservative Governments.

Speaking outside 10 Downing Street, Liberal Democrat Parliamentary Spokesperson Colin Eldridge said:

Cllr Colin Eldridge and John Pugh MP

"Gordon Brown and Labour need to listen to the people who have signed this petition. These closures mean that many, often the most vulnerable, are denied access to vital services or face long journeys and even longer queues in other Post Offices."

"Post office closures lead to the loss of other local shops and businesses ripping the heart out of local communities."

"The Liberal Democrats are the only party with a costed plan to protect and improve Britain's Post Office network."

Notes to Editors

The Liberal Democrats launched a nationwide petition against Labour's post office closures in Autumn 2007. These are the first batch of signatures to be presented. They come from a wide range of areas across England, (including Liverpool) Wales and Scotland.

Colin Eldridge presented the petition along with John Pugh MP (Liberal Democrat MP for Southport) Cllr Paul Scrivens (Lib Dem Council Group Leader in Sheffield), Brian Paddick (Lib Dem candidate for Mayor of London), Jenny Randerson AM (Cardiff Central Welsh Assembly Member), Sarah Teather MP, Munira Hassam (Lib Dem PPC for Feltham and Hayes) and many other Liberal Democrat MPs.
