Culture projects are to be boosted around Liverpool as the City Council have launched a search for five "Community Champions".

Councillor Gary Millar, Executive Member for Enterprise and Tourism who also leads on cultural legacy for Liverpool First - the city's local strategic partnership - said it was important those who were chosen had a "passion for culture".

He added: "We hope to hear from people about how the experience of Culture in 2008 and '09 has touched individuals - and how they as cultural champions can inspire their communities".

Community Champions would have to attend a range of events and compile a blog of their activities - adding another level of interaction in their role. They would also have to engage with neighbourhood committees for which they would receive free tickets to events.

Colin Eldridge, Prospective MP for Liverpool Wavertree said "Culture is thriving all across Liverpool, not just in the city centre. This scheme is fantastic at engaging the community at all levels. We [the Lib Dems] pride ourselves on Community, and this is something that can really bring people together".
