The penguins were first introduced to the public over a seven week period in November and December to highlight Liverpool's Year of the Environment. The penguins will now be auctioned off to raise money for the Lord Mayor's charities.

Sixty-seven penguins in total will be up for auction.

Because of the popularity of the penguins, an auction will now take place on the Internet to meet demand.

Mike Storey, Lord Mayor of Liverpool said "Go Penguins has enjoyed global media coverage and generated much interest around the world. I think an Internet auction makes sense as it opens up a huge window for people to purchase a unique work of art and raise money for so many worthwhile causes".

Colin Eldridge, Prospective MP for Liverpool Wavertree said "The Penguins can now be bought on the Internet, which means that the Lord Mayor's charities can be benefited further. This is a fantastic way to open up these fantastic works of art to people, and rather than the penguins being stored away, they can now be displayed and admired by all and represent Liverpool all over the world"
