"We need to scrap fees." Says Colin Eldridge4.06.54pm GMT Sun 7th Feb 2010
Colin Eldridge backed the campaign to fight tuition fees when he visited the University of Liverpool on Friday 5th of February. Colin Eldridge visited the campus to sign the "Funding our Future" pledge which states, "I pledge to vote against any increase in fees in the next parliament and to pressure the government to introduce a fairer alternative". The pledge was organised by the three student unions of Liverpool. Colin said, "Education should be a right not a privilege, that's why I am committed to the campaign to scrap fees." "The pledge I signed with the student unions was to fight against scrapping caps on top up fees, meaning students could pay up to £10,000 just to get a university education. However, I don't think this goes far enough. I am pledging to fight tuition fees full stop." Colin created his own pledge and signed it in front of students at the university which stated "I pledge to defend everyone's right to a free education by voting to scrap tuition fees in the next Parliament." The Liberal Democrats are the only main party to commit to scrapping tuition fees, whilst Labour have just announced they are cutting University funding by £449 million, meaning 6,000 students won't have places at university next year.
